Your thoughts on Beckham
Published 1 year, 1 month ago in My life.Is David Beckham overrated? He’s got a great cross and free kick, but not much else in my opinion. Hasn’t won a World Cup either. So where does he fit among the greats? (Please, don’t turn this debate into soccer being boring because there’s no goals scored. It’s purely about Beckham).

I think Beckahm is awesome — but in the same way I admire Kylie Minogue. Both have made themselves mega celebrities — and filthy rich along the way — by making more out of themselves than sheer ability alone might have suggested. And don’t get me wrong, Becks at his absolute best was fantastic to watch.
it always amazes me that we as humans put so much value on someone who only claim is they can kick, hit, throw whatever a ball around soooo dumb, as for David Beckham….soooo dumb.
Given the technology available to coaches to analyse play and the awareness of goalkeepers and defenders, the fact that Beckham can still score from a free kick shows that he is a true master of his craft. His other skill, the ability to kick a ball 30 or 40 yards right onto the feet of a fast running team mate is just aother example.
One man does not make a team but for these skills he deserves a place in the ‘best ever’ soccer team
Somewhere along the line he has also picked up an exceptional Agent who has guided his sponsorship and business decisions with remarkable success.
As for the bloke himself, he rarely comes across in interviews as witty or intelligent but then thats not his job - he’s a footballer.
Is he worth the vast sums they pay him. Certainly not - but I’d say that about any footballer and probably most other sportsmen/women. Cyclist, swimmers, skateboarders can all become millionaires at the top of their game so lets not single out one sport or one player.

so he plays sport and is good at what he does………there are lots of em.

always amazes me when people talk about undeserving when it comes to money. in the end he gets what the market or market agents (they get paid percentage!) can extract from those that are prepared to pay. and that is those that watch (or buy merchandise) a beckham or a federor or sampras or madonna etcetera, etcetera, etcetera ….
Ummm I can’t believe noone else has mentioned how EXTREMELY marketable he is, not only because he plays a beautiful game of soccer, but also because he’s pretty much always the hottest player on the field. Sure, its shallow, but its a major reason why he’s so big around the world. I know so many women who first got interested in soccer because of Becks, and it was primarily because a) he’s hot and b) he’s married to a Spice Girl. These women now enjoy the game, but its thanks to David Beckham that they got interested in the first place. So, no, he’s not overrated.
